Marco

Entrégate,

— Luis Miguel

(English)

Her smell was equal parts aphrodisiac and equal parts calming.

Soothing.

In the time since Jenny had died, there weren’t many who could calm the raging, feral animal prowling inside me. When I’d met Natascha, it was the first taste of calm after a time of raging hell.

Her words tonight shook something inside me. Cognitively, I knew she was right. My heart, though, wanted to keep punishing me.

Because it still hurt.

And I wasn’t sure that hurt would ever completely go away.

But Natascha cleansed me. With her, I felt hope.

Everything had started so slowly. Innocent, really.

Light conversation.

Easy acceptance.

And then I became addicted.

To her.

Her effect.

The ease between us.

So many times, I felt that she understood me. And come to find out, she’d experienced loss, too.

My hand remained against the door, and I brought my other one up to cage her in.

“Stay with me, cariño.”

Her eyes rounded, and she swallowed.

The feelings I had for her were serious.

Life altering.

Heart stopping.

It had snuck up on me and here I was, facing it.

I’d tried to deny them. I’d never seen myself in another relationship after Jenny. I thought I’d be content to have sought my revenge, and to raise my daughter.

But Tascha shook those plans up.

She was quietly studying me.

I needed to warn her so that she understood what this meant for me.

“So that you know, cariño. I don't believe in casual sex. If we make love, you're mine, Tascha.”

Silence followed as she continued to watch me.

“I’ve never been with anyone but Mikhail. It’s been a long time, Marco. Since I was barely an adult.” Her cheeks were pink but she held my gaze.

That was much longer than my celibacy.

Did that concern me?

Hell no.

I palmed her cheek as I looked into her crystal eyes.

“I haven't been with anyone since Jenny.”

Our eyes continued to communicate without words.

She reached up to caress me.

“What are you thinking?” I asked, gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

“This is crazy. It’s technically our first date, and we’re skipping everything in between- from the meeting someone phase, to the sex phase. And then you’re telling me that if we make love, you’re staking ownership of me?”

The laugh came out freely. “Yes. That’s exactly what I’m saying.”

Her brow furrowed and she bit her lip.

“You of all people- with your profession and your background- shouldn’t care about social customs and norms. We’ve been through too much for that.”

She looked up at me sharply. “I don’t. I’m fighting my own sense of morality and trying not to feel easy.”

I moved in quickly, her face inches from mine.

“What is there to think about? Leave your thoughts behind. What feels right? I’ve warred with myself too long, Tascha. I’m not doing it anymore. What you said to me resonated inside. It’s going to take work, but I’m willing...and you’re worth it.”

Taking her hand, I placed it over my heart. “I’ll work through the guilt that eats at me. I’ll quiet the doubts. Because in my heart, I know that this is right.
